Fauxidermy On Wood Slices
It’s Monday and for me, it’s a fun day! Yay, I’m getting ready to meet sweet Cassie from Primitive and Proper. I’m all giddy! We’ll pop some tags at some thrift stores and have lunch. I can’t wait to meet her because I love her blog. Hopefully, I’ll tell you all about it on Wednesday.
Let’s talk about my weekend. I was pretty productive and I got a little skiing in last night as well.
One of the things that I did is apply my idea of using wood slices in a small project or let’s call it a small update. I mentioned them in my Hobby Lobby post about my DIY abstract artwork tutorial last week.

Well, I couldn’t wait for the free ones to appear out of a friend’s yard. Since they were all way too wet and I didn’t want to wait weeks or months for the tree stumps to dry so I could have a few slices.
I found a really good price for them on Amazon. I got the large slices for the same price as the smaller ones would have cost at Hobby Lobby.
\While I expected to see round slices, I was surprised that they were irregularly shaped. And you know what? It’s so much better this way. I love how they look.
So are you wondering what I wanted them for?
Well, I have several animal heads hanging in our bedroom. I bought a ceramic rhino head two years ago at Ross for $13.99 (great price, right?) and since I felt he looked really lonely, I asked for some heads from ZGallerie for Christmas. I didn’t share pics of them after Christmas. But now it’s time to share.
Materials used:
- animal heads
- large wood slices
- super hooks
- hanging hardware (as shown below)
- screwdriver
Where to purchase faux taxidermy animal heads
Instructions
They needed a little somethin’ somethin’. And I thought that the rustic wood slices would be just right.
Here is how I hung them. It’s really simple.
This is the hardware that I used for the back of the slices. You can find them at every hardware store. The wood was soft enough that I didn’t have to pre-drill and I was able to just use a screwdriver to fasten the hooks with the screw by hand.
After that, I just applied a screw to the front where I wanted the head to hang. And hung the animal on it.
I used super hooks to hang the wood slices and heads on the wall. I love gorilla hooks by the way. It’s so easy to hang anything with them. No drilling, hammering, or anchors are needed and you end up with tiny holes in the wall.
I took so many photos because I love how the animal heads look now. Sorry, some are a little blurry.
I’m thinking of actually doing something with the dresser. There is too much dark brown in our bedroom right now.
The bowl on the dresser was another Christmas present from my hubby which is also from ZGallerie. It is gold on the inside. Sometimes I put a candle in it and it looks so beautiful when the light reflects off the gold. My hubby got me lots of great stuff for Christmas thanks to Pinterest 🙂
Have you ever seen a dinosaur flat screen TV? Well, now you have because mine is, LOL.
What do you think? Aren’t the heads awesome on their wood slices?
Talk to you on Wednesday.
LOVE this idea! and love the new knobs on the dresser!!! and can’t wait!
It was so much fun meeting you today!
Great idea, Julia! I love how it gives them more of a presence!
Thanks Pam
Wow these worked out perfectly. I don’t think round would have worked as well. Love that your heads are white and little more modern. It’s the perfect balance with the wood.
Yeah, the round wouldn’t have looked as nice.
Love it! What a unique way of displaying the animal heads.
Thanks Ashley!
Beautiful horned heads! Successful hunt! 😉
Thanks Alicja and yes it was a successful hunt without having to kill anything 🙂
Danke für deinen Kommentar!;)
Deine Köpfe sehen ja geil aus;)
Voool gut geworden das ganze, sieht super zu dem Holz aus!
Liebe Grüße…
Danke Lydia
They look great Julia! I love the irregular shape of the wood slices. I’m going to have to look into the gorilla hooks you mentioned since I always end up with large holes from anchors.
You should the gorilla hooks are awesome, I haven’t used an anchor in almost 2 years. I really don’t miss them at all.
What a cool idea Julia! I love those wood rounds, I just can’t help but look at them and wonder what cool things could be done with them! And those knobs are gorgeous!
Thank you Crystal!
Julia I love those animals from ZGallerie…great find on the rhino! The wood really sets them off! Also I have a mirror that needs to be put up. May give those gorilla hooks a try!
Thanks Geesha. Yes, if you have drywall, give the gorilla hooks a try.
Very cute idea!! I love animal heads mounted on unexpected surfaces. The wood slices give a perfectly rustic charm to the project. Love it!
Thanks so much Sarah
I love the way you displayed the animal heads. Such a neat idea. I love your mirror too. Great pop of color!!
Thanks Brandi!
Love these! I’ve been waiting to find some free wood slices myself, but may just have to order these!
Thanks I think you should. Can’t wait to see what you will do with them.
