Rag rug pillow DIY (easy thrift store upcycle)
Turn a $4 thrift store rag rug into stunning boho throw pillows! This rag rug pillow DIY uses denim Chindi rugs and simple hand stitching to create incredible texture for any living space. Best part? The messy stitching is completely hidden by the rug’s texture, making this an easy project even for beginners.

Materials needed
- Small jeans rag rugs from thrift stores (usually $3-5 each)
- Upholstery needle (curved or straight—your preference)
- Upholstery thread in blue or black
- Pillow inserts (I use IKEA inserts)
- Optional: Brush fringe trim for extra boho style
Budget tip: Similar handmade rag rugs sell for $20-40 on Etsy, so thrift stores are your best bet!

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Wash your rugs
Thoroughly wash and dry your thrift store rug before starting. This is non-negotiable!

Step 2: Fold and position
Fold the rug in half so you already have one closed edge (this becomes the bottom of your pillow).
Step 3: Sew the sides
Using your upholstery needle and thread, sew up both sides leaving the top open. I use a simple loop stitch, but honestly? You can be messy here—the texture of the denim rags hides everything. The edges are thick, so it takes some muscle to push the needle through, but it’s totally doable.

Step 4: Insert your pillow
Stuff your pillow insert into the sewn cover.
Step 5: Close the top (with or without fringe)
Here’s where you decide: simple closure or fringe?
- Without fringe: Just sew the top edge closed using the same technique
- With fringe: Sandwich the brush trim between the rug edges as you sew across the top (see photo for reference)
I only added fringe to the top edge so you can see the beautiful fringe better.

The messy stitching is completely hidden by the rag rug texture. You literally cannot see my black thread against the varied denim colors. This means you don’t need perfect sewing skills to get professional-looking results.
The texture these pillows add is unmatched. People always ask where I bought them and are shocked when I say “Goodwill + 20 minutes of sewing.”

Styling tips
- Mix these with solid velvet or linen pillows for contrast
- The subtle blue tones work with both neutral and colorful schemes
- Stand them up to show off the tied rug ends and fringe
- Layer multiple contrasting textures like faux fur and knit throws
Shop the look
If you’re not finding rag rugs at your local thrift stores, check:
- Goodwill textile sections
- Estate sales
- Facebook Marketplace
- Etsy (though they’re pricier—usually $25-40)
And if DIY isn’t your thing, you can find similar ready-made options, but trust me—the thrift store version is way more satisfying!

Another amazing DIY as usual, Julia. I don’t remember if I told you I’m deeply in love with the furry pillows. This instruction is really helpful for me as well as others who also love this pillow model. Thanks a lot!

Those Chindi rug pillows are amazing! Especially the deco-ish ones that sort of fan out- so much style for such a small item! Will definitely try one making some if I have free time.
