Super cute DIY gold foil Easter eggs
GOOD Friday everyone! Today I’m just sharing an Easter project with you and not because it is something totally new…NO I think everyone that has ventured around Pinterest has crossed paths with some type of gold leafing craft, in this case, gold foil Easter eggs.
I couldn’t help myself. I was so itching to try out the gold leafing/gold foil. Since I already had all the supplies, I thought the kids could try it.

For the eggs, I used paper mache eggs from the craft store because they are a lot more durable than blown-out real eggs that I usually like to use.
All materials needed
- paper mache eggs
- acrylic craft paint
- gold leaf/foil, gold sharpie, or even liquid gold leaf
- paint brush
- craft sponge
- mod podge glue (use as sealer too)
Instructions for gold foil Easter eggs
If you are doing this Easter craft project with really small kids then you might keep in mind that gold foil isn’t the right thing for them and use liquid gold with a sponge instead. My daughter got a big upset 😉 In the beginning, the kids did great. Calm, relaxed, and cheerful…
My 8-year-old son did great. Then things started to get ugly for my 4-year-old LOL. Unfortunately, I don’t have photos of the glue spilling, or the gold leaf everywhere, including hair. She switched to a gold sharpie and liquid gold instead in her frustration and that worked better for her.
- Paint the eggs with your desired craft paint color and let them dry. As you can see above my kids just let them dry on a piece of cardboard. Yes, that might leave a mark where they were placed down but that will get covered with the gold. So we don’t need to get fancy with a drying rack or contraption. (my daughter chose pink of course)
- Then use a brush to apply a coat of mod podge glue.
- Place the gold foil into the wet mod podge. Make sure that it is uneven and pat it down with a dry brush or dry sponge. (If you get frustrated with this step like my daughter then you can stipple on liquid gold instead and just skip the first layer of mod podge)
- Let the mod podge dry.
- Then apply another layer of mod podge to seal the egg and you are done. Super easy!
In the end, I think they turned out beautiful and both kids did a wonderful job.
Don’t you think so?
Since I don’t have a lot of photos of the eggs, here are some photos of the flowers coming up in our yard. I’m so ready for spring.

Not everyone loves to craft the way I do. If you fall into that category but love the look then you should check out the below Etsy shops that sell them handmade. The bonus is that you get to support small businesses.
