Living Pretty With Your Pets: Primitive and Proper
It time to meet another blogger who loves her pet today. And it’s non other than one of my most favorite blog friends, Cassie from Primitive and Proper. If you’ve been following me for a while then you know that I have met her and her kids in person already and I will also have the pleasure of rooming with this stylish and pretty chicka at Haven in Atlanta this summer. Can’t wait. No one handles a paint brush quite like her 😉
Howdy Cuckoo Fans! I am Cassie from Primitive and Proper and I am so excited to be on Julia’s blog today talking about something, or rather someone, I love very much.
When I first started dating my husband in 2000, we decided to get a dog. We got our first dog, Charlie, a pure bred beagle, from a breeder. Charlie will always have a huge place in my heart- he passed away the day after Thanksgiving in 2013. But I am not going to tell you a sad story about Charlie, and instead share with you the dog who became my companion, Jake.
In December of 2003, a good friend of mine who knew we had a soft spot for beagles called me to tell me about a litter of basset-beagle puppies at a local shelter. We had not thought about getting a second dog, but the thought of these sweet puppies at the shelter melted my heart. I called Chris at work and asked him if we could get one…. there was a long pause and then he asked, “Did you already go see them?” To which I replied, “Oh no! If I had already gone, this conversation would be different… I’d have been calling to tell you about our new puppy!” Chris made me promise to take care of it and train it, and I promised.
After I hung up the phone, I took Charlie with me to meet his new brother, Jake. I wish I had photos of him as a puppy- he was adorable! But years ago a computer crashed and I lost all of those. So I am going to start the photo sharing when Jake was almost 2, and Sawyer was a new born baby.
Charlie was always sort of a loner who put up with Jake, but Jake has always been a lover. He always wants to be where the family is.
This photo was snapped in our back yard in Louisiana, when Sawyer was 2 weeks old, and also just a few days before we evacuated due to Katrina. We were sitting out on a blanket trying to get a new family photo, and Jake insisted on being in it with us. I’d say it’s appropriate though because he has always been much more the family dog.
Jake and Sawyer were buds from day 1, both being a bit of mama’s boys. I tend to think Jake was always there with him because Jake wanted to make sure he still had my attention. 🙂 On Sawyer’s first Halloween, I thought it would be fun to dress him up like his fur brother….
One of the biggest assets to having a dog in the house…. they take care of some of the cleaning! They may lose fur and track dirt, but they are always ready to clean up crumbs, or wipe food off faces.
Jake was young and playful just as Sawyer was young and playful, and they spent a good amount of time entertaining one another. As a new mom, it was great having built in entertainment for the baby and the dog!
And this photo I am sharing simply because it’s a favorite- Sawyer’s second Halloween, walking down the street; a boy and his dog.
He has gotten so used to these morning walks, that he doesn’t usually get up without me. (His bed is in our room and if Chris gets up, he will stay on his bed; but if I get up, he’s on my heels). This is often the first thing I see in the morning when I open my eyes….
Hi Mom! What are we doing? Where are we going?
He will walk in all sorts of weather because he simply loves to walk, but if it’s hot outside, this is the post-walk scene at our house…passed out and panting!
And if it’s raining, he will walk simply to be with me, but he’s not necessarily happy about it…
He doesn’t care for being wet at all! However, give him some snow, and someone to play with, and he will go to town! We always take him out to play while we shovel. Every time we do we note that he probably could use a bath as he is never as white as the snow.
As much as I love Jake, we do not allow our pets on our furniture or beds due to too many pieces being ruined in the past. BUT, every once in a while, Jake gets a real treat. That face says it all, and he knows when he is on the bed it’s a rare moment that should be savored.
His sweet personality shines through in all he does, like humoring Emmy in wearing antlers…. (please note this photo was BEFORE our kitchen was redone)
What can I say, the kids love him and he loves the kids!
Sweet, charming, and this dog knows how to work the camera (and please note, YAY, new kitchen floor)
As I work my way through our home taking photos for home tours, Jake is always there, in whatever room I am shooting. When I shot our guest room, he made himself comfortable.
When I shot our Christmas tour, he was right there, greeting my readers.

What a sweet story. We are wild about our pets and say that our best decorating tip is to use furry ( live) accessories. Between Bethany and I we have 5 dogs, a cat and a pony, with another 2 grandcats who comes to visit regularly. Love this story about Jake. I can’t imagine life without a pet, or two or three…
