How to dress up cheap aluminum mini blinds
I’ve been wanting to share with you how I customized our cheap mini blinds for a while now but it was so difficult to photograph this window that I kept pushing it ahead. The black walls in our kids’ bathroom swallow all the light and the window is so blown out. I finally did it though and dressing up our cheap aluminum blinds was worth it. I love the custom look they now have without spending a lot of money.

It’s not a mind-blowing idea and has been done before but I still like it. We’ve always had the cheap aluminum mini blinds that you can find at any home improvement store. And while they aren’t the prettiest, they work quite well for me. Since the bathroom was a little budget makeover for our kids, the blinds had to stay cheap too.
Materials used
- mat black craft ribbon
- white aluminum blinds
- hot glue gun
- (and yarn and wood beads)
Instructions
The instructions are also super easy. I don’t have any photos along the way but that’s not a big deal because all you need to do is take the glue gun and glue the ribbon over the string that pulls up the blinds on both sides.
I counted every third aluminum slat and glued the ribbon with a dot of hot glue to that area. This way the aluminum blinds pull up in bunches that look like loops or bows.
I added some cute details to the pulling string as well with some pom-poms, wood beads, and tassels that my daughter and I made. We both love it. You can see how to make a tassel in my tassel umbrella tutorial. Simply tie the accessories to the end of the pull string and you are done.

I think it’s perfect for our kids’ bathroom and we spent a minimal amount of dollars and time on this little project.
So how about you? Could you live with cheap aluminum blinds or are you a complete hater?
Tschüß
such a fun idea! i was thinking of adding tassels to my living room curtains somehow- so fun!
Thank you and you should! I’m making some more pom poms. They are addicting
I think they are perfect for a damp place like a bathroom. Love your makeover,
Yes, they are and thanks
So smart! Totally simple but it really upgrades the look. Now talk to me about that shower curtain! I want a new one for my girls’ bathroom!
That one is from Target. Kristin used it in her bathroom too. I love it and it’s only $20
I love the bathroom, everything, but I have to say that this last touch is my favorite I think…..? I am going to check into aluminum blinds now. I have had the plastic, but the Florida sun cracks the top bar too fast and I am tired of the kitty kats breaking off the very ends to get onto the window ledge to spy on the street comings and goings. Do you think the aluminum holds up better? I always save the bottom slalts and I have replaced so many slats that those darn kitty kats break that I could have made my own by now.
HI Sheryll, the blinds are from Home Depot and I feel like they last a long time. Lasted longer than all my expensive blinds. And thanks so much.
Oh yes, where are you buying your aluminum blinds? I have in the past purchased the plastic ones from Walmart, but I think they get crappeer by the year & also hard to find the sizes I need in just plain white.
Great idea to class up those plain jane blinds!! Especially the black ribbon!
Thank you!
They look terrific. I could certainly live with them if they had that look.
Thanks so much 🙂
So.Much.Fun!!! I love this! Such an easy craft but it’s such a fun pop! Love your dark walls too!
Thanks and my daughter loves having something she made too.
Very different ! Love the idea.

That is BRILLIANT! So easy and yet so chic!
That is such a creative way to dress up blinds!!!! You are amazing!! I think this would be great in a bedroom with panels too, functional and pretty. This room looks so great Julia! Love the black with the coral mirror.
Thank you so much Lisa. And the kids are super happy which really is all that counts.
thank you
You are so darn clever! Love the whimsical touch with the dramatic black!
Oh this is so cute! I love the punch of colour against the black and white! xxx
Thanks Kim. I certainly love those whimsical little colorful creatures
I could absolutely live with cheap blinds, eapecially since I could make them cute like yours! I was so lucky to end up buying a house with nicer blinds, but they don’t seem to be very good quality as several have broken. I really like the look of bamboo roller shades though! Tangent, I really like how you’ve made your blinds cute!
Oh my gosh you’re the sweetest!! We love everything you do! Seriously you’re the best Julia thanks for the link love!
Anytime! And I love everything you do?
Very cute idea, Julia! It does make it look much cuter!
Thanks Kim
Such a great idea to totally transform the look of blinds. Love your tassel, it reminds me of the Elephant charm from Furbish- I’ve thought about trying to DIY a version and yours could definitely pass for that!
How fun is this sweet friend. I love it. The perfect way to make them look so much more intentional. Thanks for sharing.
It’s such a creative idea. It’s amazing that something simple like this can be something useful and easy to be applied. I will wait for another surprise from you.
Thank you for telling us how to dress up cheap aluminum mini blinds. I like these blinds because of the design, and also because they’re cheap. They tick all the boxes for me.
Glad you like it. Thanks!
